Lecture
“Free Ornamentation in Classical-Romantic Guitar Music”

By Dimitri van Halderen, guitarist and professor of chamber music at the Salamanca Higher Conservatory of Music (COSCYL Salamanca).

The Dutch guitarist Dimitri van Halderen is known for the variety of his repertoire, which encompasses solo guitar music from the Renaissance to the present day. He has performed in diverse ensembles: with cello, violin, string quartet, voice, and sitar; and has collaborated with composers on premieres of works for solo guitar or guitar trio.

He has played guitar since he was ten years old and received classical training, which he has combined with his passion for popular music and jazz. Although he has never lost interest in other styles, his encounter in 1991 with the Dutch guitarist Jan Wolf was decisive in his decision to dedicate his life to classical music. Jan Wolf became his teacher and mentor, and his philosophical concept of music profoundly influenced him. He continued his studies at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague with Enno Voorhorst and Zoran Dukić, and also received performance lessons from oboist Bart Schneemann and composer Cornelis de Bondt.

As a guitar teacher, he has taught at all levels; and as a chamber music teacher—though specializing in guitar ensembles—he has taught all types of groups.

He is currently a professor of chamber music at the Salamanca Higher Conservatory of Music and teaches in the summer course organized by the Bell'Arte Europa cultural association in Sigüenza (Guadalajara). He has published an article on guitar technique in the North American magazine Soundboard.
